If you live in Central Indian cities like Indore, Ujjain, and Khargone, Maheshwar is the go-to place. Something is charming about the Devi Ahilyabai Fort and the banks of the Narmada river that takes your worries away. It is also a favoured Bollywood movie shooting spot. A few scenes of the movie ‘Padman’ was shot at the Maheshwar fort and even the opening sequence of upcoming Salman Khan movie ‘Dabanng-3,’ was filmed at the Fort also.

Like the flowing river Narmada aka Rewa, Maheshwar is quite a beautiful landscape to visit in the monsoon. The easiest way to reach Maheshwar is from Indore. Many options like bus and taxi are available from various points which will take 2.5 – 3.5 hours to reach Maheshwar. Every year, many devotees come from nearby cities to the banks of Maheshwar for Ganesh Immersion at the end of Ganesh Utsav.

The best accommodation facility is the Heritage hotel at the Ahilyabai Fort itself. It is a bit expensive, but the location of the hotel is breathtaking. There are several other hotels, too, which provide affordable and clean accommodation. There are many temples to visit in the city like SahastarArjun Temple, Kashi Vishwanath temple, Ahilya Mata’s Chhatris, Chintamani Ganpati Mandir. The name of the town is based on Lord Shiva’s monicker Mahesh.

Maheshwar is also famous for the Maheshwari Sarees, a local design of Indian ethnic wear which is exported all over the country. The Maheshwar Fort was ordered for construction by Devi Ahilyabai Holker who is treated like a deity in Maheshwar. The intricate carvings of Maheshwar Fort will leave you speechless. The view of the banks will stay in your mind for a long time.
