Throughout north-western Europe, Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is commonly cultivated. A rich water-soluble fibre called inulin, Chicory Roots are a source. More effects have also been observed in research studies studying chicory root inulin. One research checked blood sugar, lipid metabolism and bowel movements for the impact of chicory root extract. Study authors found that chicory had no impact on fat metabolism, but that it could delay or avoid diabetes from developing at an early stage and boost bowel regularity.
Another research explored the evidence behind multiple uses of the chicory root-like chicory root juice for avoiding uterine cancer and tumours, jaundice chicory tea and baby chicory treatment as a tonic and purifying medicine. An animal test also found that the chicory root can have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation or prevent cancers. Manganese and B6 are also present in the chicory root, both of which play a part in brain health.
Possible Side Effects
In the United States, inulin has typically met the FDA’s designation as Safe (GRAS).2 If eaten in food normal quantities, chicory is likely to be safe. Nevertheless, large amounts of chicory root may contribute to side effects, including the risk of emmenagogue (increased menstrual flow) and abortive behaviour (leading a miscarriage). In fact, chicory root may cause allergies of the form of allergy if you have allergies to ragweed, marigold, or daisies.
Dosage And Preparation
Chicory roots can be cooked and eaten as a fruit. The leaves (endive), buds and roots can be consumed as vegetables. Some also roast or purchase roasted root of ground chicory for use alone or as a supplement for coffee. Some product labels suggest that a cup of hot water is used for substitution of two teaspoons of ground chicory coffee or that you apply a little chicory to your coffee.
Chicory root has a flavour rather’ earthy’ or’ woody’ and doesn’t produce caffeine, and therefore is a preferred beverage for some who try to remove or limit their consumption of coffee.
